Dayne story and update

Well this is easier than writing in my journal and updates the whole family at once. I will give a brief rundown on the events which have culminated to bring about the arrival and tenure of the “Great Dayne”. Darla and I finished moving into our new place on Saturday. That evening with the assistance of two takes of Castrol oil or however you spell it and a warm bath Darla felt more than your average rumble. She reported to bed and I followed suite a short time later. Around 1:30 in the morning some contractions were beginning to hit. Darla felt it wise to go to the hospital but wasn’t sure if it was for the real thing, so with her permission I stayed home with Cole. So what if I was asleep and didn’t know that she had actually left at around 2:30 she didn’t wake me and this was the groggily agreed upon plan. Around 5:30 a.m. she called and said that though only dilated to a two they would probably admit her. Cousin Camille was on hand and said as soon as she wrapped up her date she’d come over (just kidding about the date). Mounting my trustee 83’ Honda 250XL enduro I raced the 800 or so meters to the Utah Valley hospital where we were united. Darla a short time later moved to a four and the I haven’t slept in 24 hours and am a recovering alcoholic anesthesiologist came into to take matters into his capable and shaky hands. Unfortunately his first attempts were on my back but nothing we couldn’t clear up. Darla became numb after a hug needle was placed in her back. We meandered through the morning Darla pushing like a champion and everything going smoothly until dilated to a 7 came to town. At which time the pain came on strong and it was time to bring in a different anesthesiologist the first one having admitted he was an insomniac wandering around with needles.

Darla was then faced with the easy task of curling into a tight ball while enduring massive contractions and having another epidural installed. The drugs kicked in and she began to relax I dropped to my knees and expressed my gratitude at being born a male. The second epidural numbed her so much everything pretty much stopped. She stayed at a nine for about two hours. Feeling finally came back, she went to a ten and the counting started. Our Dr. looked like she was Coles’ age and was very competent. Dayne had a tipped head she did not want straightened and Darla and the Dr. fought together to guide her down the canal. At this time the epidural begins to wear off but things are going slow and the baby’s heart rate is dipping during contractions. No time to bring in the anesthesiologist who is busy on a C-section so Darla goes the last part natural. Luckily Dayne was a mere 9 lbs. 6 oz.’s 21 inches long.

Upon arrival Dayne appeared to be having labored breathing and was white. They knew that something was wrong and a swat team of nurses with kindly smiles descended on the scene. Darla was able to kiss the babe on the forehead before she was taken to the intensive care unit. After an X-Ray it was shown that she has pneumonia which is fluid trapped in the lungs. Dayne is still in the ICU but the breathing has becoming easier and she is no longer on a respirator simply a fancy nasal canula which is just a tube for the nose. The lungs are already beginning to clear and she is on antibiotics. We are told that it is common and the baby should have not lasting side effects. Worst case scenario being a 10 day stay in the hospital.

Darla has also made great progress. She has been able to walk and enjoys being taken care of by the staff and if I’m not busy reading or watching a movie me. By the way Dayne currently has black hair and indiscernible eye color. Things have gone well but we ask that you would keep Dayne and Darla in your prayers. Thank you for being such great family.

P.S. Special thanks to Emily for watching Cole who loved seeing his sister.
