Help me out!

Okay, Mike and I have not had to pay for utilities because of gov't. housing for many years. We are kind of out of touch on the whole cost of utilities thing but I just got our new Oct. bill for gas and electric and it was for $355.00. To me that feels outrageously high. Before any of you answer. Our gas is $45 for heat, we don't even have Mike's computer here yet. We don't even really watch t.v. on the weekdays, not even on the weekends for that matter, and I don't have my deep freeze plugged in. No xbox, wii, nothing (that's one of the reasons I am very frightened). I'm freaking out a little bit and I need input before I approach the electric company or my rental agency with some kind of conspiracy theory. Let me know, PLEASE!!!!

the raven

we just had the funnest FHE. (ellery and geof. were gone mon.) darla wanted to do a "scary picnic" by this lake on the way to molten falls. the lake is like the pond in "watcher in the woods."  ellery and i went ahead about 30 min. it was pitch black down this trail.  there is a bridge and that is where we left the grinning pumpkin.  we lined the railings with little tea candles and then every 30 or so feet we left a candle burning along the path.  it was magical.

i was a little worried that we would start a forest fire with our luck. i was also a little worried that they would use their flashlights and spoil the whole effect. i should have had more faith in meagan. she would let them turn them on.

we thought we wouldn't get done before they came, but we made it with time to spare and so we got to sit there in the dark and listen to all the things go creak in the dark.

they finally made it. we ate sandwiches, drank "witches brew" and meag's pumpkin cake while geof. read edgar allen poe's "the Raven" geof. loves that poem and does a great job reading it.

then we all headed back up the trail blowing out and gathering candles. it was so fun we have decided to back it a tradition. the only thing that could have made it better was to have everyone there.

love you night

Le Anne

ps no doubt meags will post pictures.

ColoradoBennett

I have some really bad news. In fact it is such bad news, I've been holding off for two whole months in telling you bloggers. I was about half way finished with Beech Tree Blog Book Year 1 when it just up and disappeared. I thought maybe it was just my laptop and if I opened up some memory the book I worked so hard on for hours and hours would return. I just ended up erasing hundreds of pictures instead (I thought they were safe and sound on the cd, but I was wrong). I sent messages to Blurb asking for help, but they haven't had the decency to reply. I searched around and several other Blurb users have had the same problem. I'm so mad I could spit.
So Beech Tree Blog Book Year 1 will not be ready in time for Christmas like I promised. Unless any of you know an online blog book making company more reliable than Blurb.

P.S.

The most amazing part about Julia's adorable cakes was the fact that she has never worked with fondant before and still managed to create those amazing works of art. She truly has a gift! Thanks again Jules!
And Jesse thank you for your blog about your most useful baby items on your blog. as you can see by the monitor and diaper champ.

Shower commentary by Ellynn

The shower didn't really happen last night but Jason wrote that blog a couple days ago and already posted it on his family blog. He's way more on top of it than i am. It really was a blast though. It ended up being more like a Halloween party than a baby shower which is my idea of a good time! We had a couple games planned but there were just way too many people to even play them. we did play “how big is mama’s belly”. i’ve decided that this is not a good game to play. All but 3 people over-guessed by at least a foot. i’m not even gonna comment on that. but that’s cool.

As Mom said it was a monumental effort to put the shower on but i think i get the gold medal for my brownies. the brownies that never even got served. This probably gets the silver medal.IMG_0134

Jason spent a good 3 hours helping me make the invites. and by helping me i mean i was taking a nap during most of it.

The bronze medal is a three way tie between Darla making the amazing pumpkin soup which we served out of a real pumpkin. Mom with her costume and aunt Joanie’s chocolate-dipped gingersnaps and Cory and Dad doing everything behind the scenes.

IMG_0175

Okay so the brownies. Meagan actually deserves half the medal for putting up with and helping me. So i have this amazing brownie recipe with Hershey’s special dark european cocoa. (freaking amazing by the way). I’m adding the last ingredient to this delectable mix when somehow i misconstrue 2 cups with 8 cups. That’s right EIGHT! don’t even ask me how something that stupid happens but it did. luckily we had 24 EXTRA eggs on hand so we could fix the problem. So 3 boxes of cocoa, 32 eggs and a serious test of Meagan’s and my math skills later we have sugar all over the floor and 8 batches of brownie mix. They never got served because by the time we got 2 pans baked, they didn’t have enough time to cool so we could put the frosting on. i still don’t know what on earth we’re going to do with all of it. IMG_0156

This picture doesn’t have much to do with anything except that i love it! Please also notice the color of the walls in the back ground. Meagan spent the better part of 3 days painting her living room so it would be done in time for the shower. Mom and Cory were a huge help and i’m an awesome supervisor/hole finder. The shower was the first time most people in the ward had seen Meag’s house and EVERYONE was very impressed. it really is fantastic.

From all reports everyone had a good time and a couple of them even said it was the funnest baby shower they’ve ever been to. Can’t beat that. So in the end it was worth all the effort. Especially since be scored enough cash to pay for our dresser, order our stroller and still get a few essentials we really need.

The baby finally too...er got a shower!

Well this is gonna be a good picture extravaganza. There was a lot that went on last night and Ellynn had a lot of fun from the sounds of it. They invited about 40 people and all but 3 r.s.v.p’d and eventually showed up. So it was a happenin’ party. Lots of cool pictures to post. I’ll put pictures with a short explanation and I'm sure Ellynn will give you a more in depth coverage later.IMG_0144

So plenty of costumed women filled Meagan and Cory’s house. From what I hear the men had fled to other sanctuaries to wait out the storm.

IMG_0149

The Rocker and the Japanese outfit got first and second best costumes respectively for the party.

IMG_0151

Lots of food at the party.

IMG_0150

This is Julia, Brind’s wife, she made some way cool cakes that we’ll show you pictures of later. She works at target and got us a few gifts from our registry so they did a lot for the shower.

IMG_0155

This is Meagan’s 80’s aerobics instructor costume.

IMG_0152

Bennett was a cowgirl.

IMG_0157

Darla was an 80’s prom queen. Can you tell we like to rag on the 80’s? Who doesn’t though…such an easy target, kinda like that slow kid in dodge ball. Hehe.

IMG_0163

This is Leanne’s Ghoul Bride costume. She has a lot of cool costumes stored from years past and has the makeup for some pretty cool costumes. This is one of Ellynn’s favorites.

IMG_0159

Ellynn was a witch…for the party…not referring to general mood. Hehe. She said this picture was flattering, not to mention she’s holding a roll of cash there which is all gonna be spent on our new stroller.

IMG_0146

These are the cakes Julia made. Everyone said they should be in a Martha Stewart Catalog. They were very creative. She’s a pretty good cook. We’ve only suckered her into cooking dinner for us once so far. Brind had an idea to make the inside of one of the bellies out of red Jell-O and to put a plastic baby in it so that as you cut into it the red Jell-O gushed out. Pretty creative and totally a Brind idea as Ellynn said. Julia just stuck with cake batter for all three though so people could actually have something to eat.

IMG_0167

Ellynn was on her feet for a lot of the day. She had a Relief Society service project in the morning and then lots of preparation for the part in the afternoon. All this led to some very swollen ankles by the end of the day. Ellynn had to document the event for posterity.

Here’s some of the gifts we got, at least the ones that I could easily snap a pic of. People brought some very nice and very creative gifts. It was really nice to get a lot of these things and to not have to worry about having to go buy this now. It was a big help.

IMG_0168

This is the Diaper Champ. Tony and Jess say it’s the best thing for throwing away diapers and not having it smell bad. It never really lets air out, kinda has the nuclear waste disposal feel to it which is what diaper changing feels like sometimes…

IMG_0169

This was a diaper cake. At least that’s how Ellynn explained it. This gift was very creative. Diapers were wrapped into layers (like a cake) and topped with various lotions, towels and other baby items.

IMG_0170

This is a pile of the smaller items and bags we got. Diapers, wipes, some good books, bathrobes, and lots of others things. I haven’t had time to go through everything yet but there were lots of cool useful gifts.

IMG_0171

This is the monitor system we signed up for at target. It has the receiver and then two speaker systems that you can set up. Both the speaker systems have lights that signal noise volume so you can tell just by looking at it if there’s noise. These were also recommended to us and are supposed to be very good.

IMG_0172

And this is the sweet baby grooming kit from Target. Lots of good stuff in there for first time parents and it’s all neatly put together in one kit which is nice.

So that was the whole shebang. Ellynn is gonna post later and tell all about the shower and different funny things that happened. This post was mainly so you could see all the pictures she took and get a good feel for what went on. Thanks for all your help and support as this baby has grown!

Interview time...

I have some great news.

Tony will be interviewing with University of Washington on November 6th for their PA program.

I am so excited and so proud of him.  If I lived a few hours from my you guys I would just die.  So he will be in Seattle from the 5th to the 7th.  I really hope it works out.  (Plug your ears mom) Surprisingly, I am looking forward to a change and a move.  I really wish he could go to the school in Portland so we could be neighbors but I would love for him to start the program this year and he can't apply for Portland until next year.  So we will see.

I feel like I haven't blogged in forever.  Sometimes I just can't get everything done in one day.

Love you guys.

holding hands with a child

I have decided to hold hands with a child is to touch the world

lest you think i am being incredibly and uncharacteristically sweet let me explain. i hate touching handrails. i wait for someone else to brave the germs of the public restroom door handle. if it doesn't look like I'm going to get out any time soon i will with some trepidation use my pinky finger at the very top of the handle to open the door. i tell myself that anyone that would touch there is as big a germaphobe as i am. i used to use anti-bacterial lotion in vast amounts similar to that used by jodie foster in "nim's island." (i have really cut back).  i wash my hands all the time and insist g'kids do too--wipe off my doorknobs and light switches at home with clorox wipes on a regular basis etc. etc. etc.

in spite of repeated threats and warnings it was amazing to me how many surfaces a child can find to run their hands along.  i watched them walk on tiptoe to be able to reach a ledge way above their heads--just in case they might have missed some readily available germs. where is this skill and attention to detail when it comes to dusting? "hey, wait you forgot a a window sill. if this had been disneyworld you would have done that and the window casing above."

they were crawling around over and under everything--collecting snails with uncle adam and putting them in a new puddle in the parking lot and then they want to hold hands with g'ma, snuggle up and be held and because i love them to death i am happy to do it and then we all wash our hands, feet and faces---before bed at least.

the shower for ellynn was awesome and quite the group effort--darla julia, the missionaries, even our 85 year old neighbor and her son-in-law got in on it helping bake the bread bowls that rose all at once.  what a riot, i will let them give you the details.

life is so good, we had fun visiting with almost all the robbins family and a week later getting to take kel for breakfast on his way back through portland. he is honestly the cutest kid ever!!!

love to all, aunt le anne

Baby train’s a comin’!

IMG_0137

Ellynn’s belly was pretty big in that shirt so we snapped a picture to give you a good idea of where she’s at. She’s definitely in the “uncomfortably large” stage of pregnancy right now. She’s ready to get this baby out. We’re getting hospital bags ready so we can head out to the hospital if needed anytime over the next month. We took a tour of the hospital she’ll be delivering at and we were very impressed with it. I’ll be taking my camera and laptop bag along on delivery day so we’ll try to get as many pictures as we can  So there’s a little update on us. I’ll keep snapping pictures and update you more later. Take care!

IMG_0138

This is a dresser we got so the baby clothes could go in our old one. Ellynn’s in love with it. It only cost 78 bucks so I kinda like it too…

wow i really need to blog.  i was trying to think about cute things my kids have done lately, but i can’t , so i need new kids.

all of jackson’s dreams came true this weekend when jake came up.  i think they spent 90% of the weekend together which is only 10% less than what they wanted.  awhile ago jack told me that his one true wish was that rob had not died.  so sad.

the rest of the weekend was good too.  it was so fun to play with patti.  i really miss her!  jack played the best game, and the hot-shot kid on the team who is usually mean to him wasn’t.  i think jake and robbie were good luck.  benn and wil both had their soccer parties this week and got great trophies and gifts from their coaches.  we love soccer!

we also started a painting project and with tons of help form mom (painting) and elly, jason and darla (watching kids) we are almost done!!  i love paint and color!

well it is officially dark.  dark in the morning, dark in the early evening, dark.  i am going to try and embrace the dark this year.  when i wake up and it is cold and dark and raining i am going to love it as much as a nice sunny spring morning.  maybe some great new cool weather running clothes would help.

well i’m off to finish the painting so the house will be beautiful for ellynn’s halloween baby shower!  oh we are so excited!

blog out…….me

WA Bennetts

This past weekend we went with Ellery, Ellynn and Jason, and Bennett, Wilohm and Hazel to Pomeroy Farm. It's owned by one of Ellynn's good high school friend's family. It was wonderful. A perfect, clear fall day. Loved it. Thanks Ellynn...
