VA

I'm sure most of you have heard of this book. I hadn't until recently. My friend had it and I scanned through it at her house and was really excited to try it. I got it at the library a couple weeks ago and wasn't able to pull myself together until today to actually make some of the purees and bake something. The kids and I made Peanut Butter and Banana Muffins tonight (with hidden carrots). They LOVED it! I was a little nervous because Cole saw me scooping the carrot puree into the mix and said "yuck mom! Why are you putting carrots in there?" We ate about 2 each (okay I had 3) while watching a movie. I'm so excited. We'll see how motivated I am a month from now. Anyway, I noticed buds on all the trees today which was crazy. Spring happens overnight here. I love it. We are doing well. LeAnne left on Monday and the kids are still asking for her. Anytime Dayne see's anyone even remotely similar to Dana she says "There's Grandma!". So funny. She's talking so much now...a little too much. She sings constantly and the first thing she wants to do when we walk in the door is to turn the stereo on and dance. She's also starting to talk back quite a bit which I don't like. I'm not the kind of mom that can just laugh it off and call her "sassy". Any advice on this? Cole is learning so much and seems to enjoy his little pre-k class. It was really hard for me to finally agree to put him in, but it was pretty necessary with the situation we're in: with nobody Cole's age close by to play with or do school. It's all day everyday here which I don't like at all, but I talked to his teacher and she said it was fine if we wanted to pick him up early (or just take him out when we want...my idea). June is still tiny and adorable which is why I seemed to have forgotten that she's 8 months!! I've been so exhausted and cranky from lack of sleep and am determined to get her sleeping through the night. Tonight will be night 2 of the 5, 10, 15 minute checking in/letting baby cry it out method. No, I don't know the technical term. It was difficult last night but I felt okay about it. I'm just too grumpy of a mom or wife without my sleep. Well, I've bored you all to tears. We loved reading the blogs about the wedding. We wish we could of been there. Cort and Rodger, Congrats! You both looked smokin' HOT! (: love, Darla and fam

Carry 'n Stroll Convenience Stroller

Hey guys,

A few weeks ago we went to Sam's Club and found these rockin' strollers for only $22 so we bought them out and tried to sell them on KSL.com but it didn't work.  So we are going to take them back tomorrow but I wanted to see if anyone is interested in buying one first.  It would be $23.25, they are normally $80.

They are really cool, we kept one and we gave one to Alicia.

So for all the recently married people out there this may be too soon but it never hurts to plan for the future.  They are nice because they are more compact then a jogger or normal stroller (a little bigger than an umbrella stroller but easier to control than an umbrella stroller too, plus the handles are higher which is Tony's biggest complaint about our umbrella stroller)  The best part is that it holds car seats too, any car seat, it is a universal system.  So when we bought our Chico car seat (which I recommend by the way) we didn't get the whole stroller system too because I wanted a jogger.  So now this little beauty came along for only 20 bucks and made it so I can leave her in her car seat if I want.  Any who, I need to know ASAP if you are interested because we need to sell them back soon.

Love Jess

Here is a little description of it...

The Carry N Stroll is unique in the marketplace combining the convenience of a universal infant seat carrier with the long term use of a convenient stroller. The lightweigth frame is easy to push. The 1 hand fold and stand with manual safety lock parents can easily fold. Stroller remains standing when folded. The 5 point harness system keeps baby safe and secure, while the 3 position adjustable canopy with peek a boo window provides sun and weather protection. The seat is concealed when stroller is used as infant seat carrier to provide extended use of product from newborn through toddler years. The universal infant seat attachment is a secure and convenient way to carry baby's car seat.

Bavaria

This is copied over from Stinchfield's blog- we are doing a running contest that I am losing miserably. Today, for instance, I got in one and a half miles. Sawyer was screaming the whole time, Jane had him, and I couldn't stand it anymore. So here ya go-

I have been seriously slacking in the running challenge but it is not because I want to. I had a million projects to get done before my mom got here and I had to spend time researching for a meeting I had with Ellyn's school yesterday. The meeting went really well. I was pretty nervous, it was me convincing the principal, the school psychologist, the EFMP manager, 4 therapists, Ellyn's teacher, and the Early Intervention Rep. that Ellyn's current program was inadequate (not that it wasn't obvious but I was afraid they would fight it) and drawing up what I thought was appropriate. I wasn't sure how supportive everyone was going to be. Most everyone was right on board, the speech therapist thought we could do it with minor changes- I think her ego was seriously getting in the way. The principal was cautious but agrred with me, which I expected, especially after last year. Anyway, during the next month all of the info. has to go up through admin. for Europe. Chances are very thin that they will be able to get Ellyn everything that she needs but we need to make sure first. From there they will work on getting us back to the states. We would move early and Mike would meet us after deployment. It sucks in most ways but it's killing me that Ellyn isn't getting what she needs over here.

Well I have to go get Sawyer dressed, he's prett upset that he's still in a onesie. Hood to Coast would be awesome, I would just have to see where we were.

Post Number 2000

SWEET

I guess we have had a lot to blog about

ColoradoBennett

I was hoping to post a very "Jessica Smith" type post all about Adam's birthday, but I forgot my $%^%&* camera, making said post impossible. In fact, I just erased a lengthy blog about last weekend's adventures because I found it unsufferable without pictures attached. I'll try summing up, and you add pictures in your mind: My parents watched our kids. We drove up with Marcus and Marisa to my parent's log house. Met up with other friends, Jeremy and Liesl. Ate fondue. Rode tubes down big hill in the dark. Played Rock Band. Went skiing/snowboarding. Ate at resturant where Adam ordered Rocky Mtn. Oysters. Watched movie about Jonny Cash. Ate some more. Picked up children. Look forward to repeating.

Bennett in Utah

let me just say that i love, love, loved being together for court's wedding. that was so much fun. the fondue party was a fantastic idea. lots of food, fun and no dishes. can you beat that? i submitt that you cannot!
we are now moved in with jason's parents as of 1 month ago. we have our own little studio appartment just big enough for our bed, t.v. and our couch. it's perfect. i'm usually home late so it's nice that jason can be here with his family and i'm gone enough that they still think it's fun to have me around too. we are both working like crazy but the good news is that i'm cutting down to 2 jobs now! that will be so nice. i will finally have 1 whole day off every week besides sundays. i haven't had that in a VERY long time. over a year actually. we just got called to teach the CTR6 class and we love it! 5 kids and they are all boys. i think there are 5 there were only 3 in church on sunday and we had to sit with one on each side of us and one between us durring sharing time to keep them quiet. they are stinkin cute though.
k one quick thing before i go. i'm not sure if meagan blogged this or not cuz i'm not caught up at all but... when meags got home from utah and her kids saw the low lights i put in her hair hazel asked "mom, what you do your hair?" "i dyed (died) it" "who killed it?". anyway i thought that was so cute i had to blog it. k well i love you all and i had a blast seeing everybody. those of you who weren't here, i'm sorry but you're dead to me. just kidding geoffy. i know you tried. brooke has a good excuse and brind IS a sorry excuse. he he he he.

Cam, it was great to hear from you guys and I love your family picture. Your family is beautiful. I'm jealous that you all got to hang out together. Mom got here yesterday and has been filling me in on all the details. It sounds like, as usual, you all had alot of fun.

Yes, Jacki, mom is here safe now. She's a terrible influence. She told my girls they needed to help finish off all the different cartons of icecream in my freezer (we had a game night with friends Saturday night) and that was at 9:30 on a school night. The only thing that makes me feel okay about that is that Sadie is the only one really in school and many nights I will think the girls are fast asleep and it will be 10:15 or so and Sadie will yell down "I love you mom."

Sawyer and I both woke up with colds this morning. He kept coughing and throwing up so we were both soaked and so I got us both up and changed our tops and now, for the moment, he's laying happily by my side. I think we are going to go back to sleep for a little bit.

Today I have a meeting with all of Ellyn's therapists, teacher, school admin., and a few others to discuss her schooling. I'm kind of nervous about it because I'm going to be telling them that they need to do this, this, and this or move us back to the states where the services are available. I know I've already written about this, it was supposed to be last week but they rescheduled so they would have everyone at the meeting.

Sadie is the super star kid at school this week. She has loved that. Of course I think in her mind she is the super star every day. Today she gets to have someone come in and read a story in class and she picked Jane. Yes, Jane loves homeschooling and everything she gets to do. She does a very good job staying on task though. She did school work the whole way to the airport yesterday and finished on the way home (it's four hours away).

Well Sawyer just filled his britches so I'm going to go. I love you all. love, Brooke

It was great to see all of you that were able to make it for the wedding. We had a great time. I have to echo Cory a little bit. It really has been great marrying into a family that is so close. I am not very close to most of my cousins so it is fun to me to be around so much family, especially because everyone gets along so well.

I hope that we were not the cause of anyone else getting sick but we just finished a bout of the flu at our house. Harley started to get sick right when everyone got into town and finally went back to school yesterday. Beck is still feeling a little sick and Liza is better now too. Luckily Moni and I only felt it for a couple of days.

Anyway it was great to see everyone and we missed those of you who couldn't make it. Hopefully it won't be too long before we get to see you too.

va in ri

well greetings from the lovely ocean state. Rhode Island is rediculously gorgeous and i just got back to the hotel after walking all over the place. Jack, mom is still in Richmond and is currently watching darby o'gille and the little people with my little people. it was a lot of fun having mom out here while darla went out to texas to help with her sisters new baby. we had a lot of fun walking all over richmond. Adam happy birthday again you truly are the best brother and friend one can have.
So I had a cruel awakening just the other day. I was driving down the road with my children. this i am alright with. the fact that I was driving a mini van while they sang along to spidey and friends was not. i always looked at my friends parents who drove mini vans and played crap childrens music the same way i looked at women who wore moo moos to church. their life was kinda over. so I'm growing my hair out for a comb over and buying a sports car. not really but a mullet could be cool. life is good we really missed not being there for the fondu party and wedding but will swing out to utah one of these days. alicia i would really appreciate some more stories of you children. it usually leavs me rolling on the ground for a while and lets us know that we're not alone with cole and dayne. dayne's favorite thing to say by the way is "no he's the one" it refers to cole always being to blame. it's kind of like we've cloned meagan.

Hi

LeAnne, are you in Germany?

my hero

"holy crap it's adam's birthday!"  that was my thought this morning.  we should have sung to you while we were in utah.  how about we call the fondue party your birthday party.  now that was a party to write home about.  i hope you get to party like a rock star tonight, but without drugs and alcohol and scary nasty people who only use you for your money and fame.  are you going to the cabin this weekend?  i love you and can not think of anyone who could be a better big brother.  i will share a story now......

when i was a freshman adam was a junior.  one day i was in gym class and the divider between the older class and my class was open and for some reason this older guy started calling me these awful names.  most of which i didn't know the meaning of.  (thanks to my very protective older brother, my nickname was "virgin ears")  i was very upset that this older very good looking guy would be so cruel.  so i went and told adam, i'm sure through many tears.  during "break" adam and about 5 of his (very scary) friends confronted the jerk and later i got a very nice apology.  that is how my big brother has always taken care of me.  i am so grateful to have you as a brother and best friend!!

love............meags

Happy 25th Adam!!

Ditto to what Brooke said Adam! You're an amazing man who naturally wants to help others. That's such a needed trait in this world! We love you Adam! Have a greeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaattttttttttttttt day! love, Geof., darla, cole, dayne, and june

Blog #1,993- we are almost to two thousand-Happy Birthday Adam!!

What to say about one of the most amazing brothers anyone could have (there are another two possibilities out there)? Adam, I am so blessed to have you as my brother. You have grown up into such a good man. You have a heart of gold and you are such an example of caring for others. I never doubt that if I ever needed anything you would do anything in your power to make sure I was taken care of. I have so much appreciated your advice, your listening ear, your example for so many years. You are amazing and I love you. I hope you have a wonderful birthday bud. You deserve it.

To all you married folks out there, happy anniversary!!!!

Love,
Brooke

A new link...

Hey all. I tossed a link to Rob's site over on the right-hand side of our blog. After this weekend (a FANTASTIC weekend, no doubt), it was requested a couple of times that the link be posted so people can keep an eye on the progress of this miraculous individual. For those who don't know Rob or the situation, Rob Epperson and his family are great friends with all of the Washington-based Bennett family members, and he was diagnosed with cancer around the Holiday season of 2007-2008. His wife, Patti, does most of the posting on the site, usually daily. She does an amazing job keeping all involved with the situation, amongst the million other things she has to deal with. His site is an inspiration. Be sure to read the comments (guestbook) section.

Again, this weekend was amazing. I've said it before and I'll say it many more times again, but I really did marry into a family of best friends. It's mind-blowing to think of all of that love and support just hanging around out there in the form of all of you.

Outstanding.

We had so much fun at the wedding. My camera ran out of batteries at the temple, so I have no pictures of the other festivities. Chelsea and Joe, thank you so much for the luxurious accomidations at your home. You get 5 stars from the Bennetts. Fondue night was a blast, thanks Kevin and Alicia for letting us crash your house.
I taught seminary for the first time today. Just as a sub-, not my new calling. I taught 2 Samuel, and I think the story of King David is one of the top five most important stories in the OT. There were only two girls there, and they were 30 minutes late. But, hopefully the Spirit was there.
I started my own family blog because I'm green with envy with how great Jessica and Cortney's blogs are. Plus some friends have their own blog and it is slightly awkward to direct them to this one because it really isn't my own. I haven't posted anything yet. Partially because I don't have internet until Adam gets home from work each day, and partially because I think now might be the wrong time.

Alicia and LKev

For those of you that didn't know! It is a "MAN CHILD"!!!!!!!! We don't know what we are going to do with him, but I think that we will get the hang of it!!

Bavaria

Just wanted to send a little blog along to my family. First of all Cortney and Rodger, I hope you have a wonderful wedding. What an amazing experience. I got my invitation the other day and you two are gorgeous. Joanie, you have given your girls the best gift you could ever possibly give them. I don't want to sound patronizing or anything but I am so proud of you. You are wonderful.

Tony, Happy Late Birthday!! I hope it was a fun one. I know that darling wife of yours probably took great care of you.

So, the fastest way to put Sawyer to sleep (when nursing doesn't do it) is to wrap him in his blanket, lay him in the middle of my bed and turn on Cold Play really loud. It works wonders. You can't be there with him though. At night he'll normally just lay here beside me while I e-mail Mike and fall asleep but today he found his feet so he keeps kicking off his blanket to play with his toes. He thinks they are great. Now he's moving his head to angle himself for easy eye contact, just laying in my lap as happy as a clam. I ADORE this kid, you know, just like I adore his sisters.

Life continues to stay busy and get busier. I pulled Jane out of school today. She's going to homeschool for at least a quarter and see what she thinks. I have not had any problems with her teachers. Actually, they love her. But this is a rough school. Not to sound like an elitist but I wouldn't be putting my kid in this school if we were in the states. Every day she is getting picked on, multiple horrible things said to her and it's kids in general, not just one or two. I was talking to a friend tonight and she said her son was facing the same problem. They have a very religious family and her kid is a straight arrow and I think these kids are really more likely to be ridiculed. Even more so than at a normal middle school (because we all know that m.s. sucks). I can't think of what else it would be, Jane's cute, she wears cute clothes, she's funny, and she has some really good friends. So I don't really know if Jane was a target or if it is just a general condition but it was really bad and I kept trying to have her stick it out and stick up for herself and then it was disturbing me because asking her to have an attitude or make snide comments (not insults)back went against so much of what Jane is- a good, sweet girl and it wasn't working anyway. She has her faults too, we know she can be a little drama, but her moral compass is finely tuned and I don't want that to go away. It isn't our parenting, trust me.

Not to compare but a funny little example of that would be this- just the other day Sadie was complaining that she didn't get a sweetheart at the end of the day because she wasn't being good but she couldn't because she and Sophia were having too much fun. The story of her life

Anyway, day one went really well but it was English and Social Studies and P.E., tomorrow is math and science and French (the language of choice)but the good news is that her math teacher sent me her whole curriculum and her on-line textbook and their schedule (I told you her teachers love her). So hopefully it will all work out.

It's funny but in some ways I feel like I'm becoming the mom that I always pictured that I would be. Really careful about my kids nutrition, very earth conscious (you have to be over here), very involved in enriching their education (I always wanted to home-school until I realized I couldn't teach the real fundamentals and that I didn't want my kids to be dorks-maybe that hasn't worked). Maybe the Lord knew I was too lazy to do it on my own- not that I wasn't concerned about all of these things to a certain extent but never to the level that I felt comfortable. Aren't you all so glad that you get to read all of my babble- yikes. I will get off of here before I bore you to death. You can just be happy I don't have time to blog very often.

Ellynn, Jane is studying Greece soon and we need to go "enrich." Don't back out babe.

Have fun this weekend. I will miss you all. Love, me

Even if it wasn't from Jay Leno (sometimes they aren't from who they claim to be from) It's still good and true

You MUST read to the end. Jay Leno puts it into perspective and makes
us think about the pathetic negativity. That's right, Jay Leno!!

Jay Leno wrote this; it's the Jay Leno we don't often see....

"The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some
poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true, given the
source, right?

The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with
the direction the country is headed, and 69 percent of the country is
unhappy with the performance of the President. In essence, 2/3's of
the citizenry just ain't happy and want a change.

So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking, "What are we so
unhappy about?"

Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7 days
a week?

Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer
and heating in the winter?

Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job?

Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time, and
see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?

Maybe it is the ability to drive from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic
Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move
through each state?

Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find along
the way that can provide temporary shelter?

I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from
around the world is just not good enough.

Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up
and provide services to help all, and even send a helicopter to take you to
the hospital.

Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home. You
may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a
group of trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch
equipment to extinguish the flames thus saving you, your family and
your belongings.

Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a
burglar or prowler intrudes, an officer equipped with a gun and a
bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against
attack or loss.

This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias
raping and pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where 90 percent of
teenagers own cell phones and computers.

How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we
enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world?

Maybe that is what has 67 percent of you folks unhappy.

Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the
world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S., yet has a
great disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are. The most
blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain about what we
don't have, and what we hate about the country instead of thanking the
good Lord we live here.

I know, I know. What about the President who took us into war and has
no plan to get us out? The President who has a measly 31 percent
approval rating? Is this the same President who guided the nation in
the dark days after 9/11? The President that cut taxes to bring an
economy out of recession? Could this be the same guy who has been
called every name in the book for succeeding in keeping all the spoiled
ungrateful brats safe from terrorist attacks?

The Commander-In Chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there
defending you and me? Did you hear how bad the President is on the news
or talk show? Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you
couldn't take a look around for yourself and see all the good things
and be glad?

Think about it...are you upset at the President because he actually
caused you personal pain OR is it because the "Media" told you he was
failing to kiss your sorry ungrateful behind every day.

Make no mistake about it. The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have
volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died for your
freedom. There is currently no draft in this country. They didn't have
to go.

They are able to refuse to go and end up with either a "general"
discharge, an "other than honorable" discharge or, worst case
scenario, a "dishonorable" discharge after a few days in the brig.

So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69 percent of
Americans? Say what you want, but I blame it on the media. If it
bleeds, it leads; and they specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch
a car crash with blood and guts. How many will watch kids selling
lemonade at the corner? The media knows this and media outlets are
for-profit corporations. They offer what sells, and when criticized,
try to defend their actions by "justifying" them in one way or another.
Just ask why they tried to allow a murderer like O.J. Simpson to write
a book about "how he didn't kill his wife, but if he did he would have
done it this way"...Insane!

Stop buying the negativism you are fed everyday by the media. Shut off
the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the bottom of
your bird cage. Then start being grateful for all we have as a
country. There is exponentially more good than bad.

We are among the most blessed people on Earth, and should thank God
several times a day, or at least be thankful and appreciative.

"With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding,
severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another,
and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, "Are we sure
this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?"

yesterday was tony's birthday?  oooh so close to 30!  i hope you had a spectacular time in the sun!  i'm so glad to have you on both sides of my family!!

I need all y'all's (I'm in Virginia now) advice...ideas, whatever. Dayne's hair is pretty much a frizzy mess most days. She hair all those little baby hairs around her face and they get frizzier and messier as the day goes on. Should we cut it into a short bob, or even shorter? Should I just continue to let it grow and maybe add some sort of product? And if so, what? Should we do bangs or would that just be a mess since her hair has so much curl?
Let me know! I expect a reply from you Ellynn!

bg me

joanie thanks for getting on the blog.  you are so amazing.  i am grateful to have an aunt like you, you are a wonderful example of a mother!

jacky, thanks for sending the pictures of grandpa.  if anyone is smarter than me and could post them on the blog i would love it.  i think it would be good to see the other half of how the beautiful sisters came to be.  he looks so much like geof. it makes me tear up.  i wish i knew him then!  there is one picture when he looks just like jesse or the other way around.

rose came to church with us yesterday.  rose is cory's little sister who was divorced last year so is raising two of the cutest, sweetest kids in the world by her self, but with great support from her family.  she has mentioned a few times about getting the kids to a church.  friday we spent the day together and she mentioned it again.  so sat. i called and asked if she wanted to come to church with us and she said YES!  she didn't bring baby dave who is 21 monthes, but she did bring marissa who is hazel's best buddy.  she said that she really enjoyed it and liked the way it was set up and was glad to see that bringing dave would not be a problem.  (we have the loudest ward with 12 million kids). when they introduced her in relief society they said, "and you must be here helping with the eppersons."  (i watch the twins during sunday school and of course she took one for me).  i told them that she was cory's sister and just a really good helper.  when we went to pick up the girls in nursery the leader asked if marissa would be there from now on and rose said, "i hope so".  how cool is that.  one of our really good friends taught r.s. and she has two kids and got divorced about the same time rose did.  it was the perfect lesson taught be the perfect person.  i pray that this will lead to more of cory's family coming into the gospel.  he would be so happy and i love to see him happy!

Cortney's wedding

Okay I know you don't hear from me so often but I wanted to write a quick note. About 2 years ago, a couple of my kids came to me asking who would be with them when they went through the temple? That's all it took. I wanted to be there when my kids went through the temple. I knew the time was coming when Cortney and Rodger would get married. The time came a little quicker than I thought but non the less I started working towards that goal. Through my process of becoming temple worthy the 2 things that kept me going were, my kids asking, who would be there with them? The other was picturing in my mind them entering the temple for the first time and being married there. (For those of you that have kids you know you would do anything for them.) Once I started the process I knew I was going to make it and I would be able to fulfill my dream of being there for them.

Yesterday Cortney went through the temple for her endowments. I was so excited that it was me that got to sit by her and be there with her! It brought back many memories of my Mom being there with me for the first time. I was also loving it because many of my extended family was there also. Paula, Monica, Cameron, Jack, Kev, Alicia, Little Kev, Rodger's dad and step mom, Holly, and Grandma and Grandpa Bennett. (I know my Mom was there also!!) I think Cortney survived. I'm so excited for next Saturday to see them be sealed to each other. I've thought about some of the sealings that I have seen recently, and because I haven't been to so many, actually all I can remember is Brind's and my own. Just a little FYI, Brad and I went through 1 year to the date of being married one year earlier. We got to have Chelsea come in when she was almost 7 months old. They layed her on her stomach, on the alter, after Brad and I were sealed, then they said a pray and sealed Chelsea to us. I'll never forget, in the middle of the prayer he mentioned, in the prayer, something about Brad holding her with his right hand, which at the time he wasn't, I peeked open my eyes and saw Brad's finger reach over and touch her with his right finger, just to make sure the blessing was took.

I hear that a lot of you are coming to Cortney and Rodger's wedding and ceremony. I can't tell you how honored I feel that you would take the time and travel the distance to do this. From what I told you above, I have looked forward to seeing this event take place and am so proud that the little family that our Mom, Grandma, and Great Grandma started and that she has so many worthy children, grandchildren and spouses to be there! I know that Cortney has really struggled with whom is included in the lunch after, as well as myself. Because of other extended family from Rodger's side that will not be there to witness the ceremony, they felt they needed to draw the line somewhere. I can't tell you the feeling I had when I saw everyone in the temple yesterday supporting Cortney and Rodger, that were from our family. I hope you understand and know that to me, you are there for the most important time of the day, to celebrate, and to actually witness their sealing.

Please know that you are more than welcome to stay at my house, any of you, and if you let me know what you would like me to stock my house with, as far as food or whatever I will do it for you. I love you all and my family means the world to me and I know it does to Cortney also. Grandma Arlene, Grandma Thomas, Granny, Mom, however we know her, you know she has to be proud.

Love you and be safe!

Love, Joan

va

Well we got back to town late last night from 3 days in D.C.. It was as always a wonderful and educational experience. Trying to cart 3 children around the city of course inhibited us from seeing all that we wanted. It seemed to take forever to get out the door and of course when we got to where we were going it was time to eat. Frustrating... I was able to tour the capitol building while Darla hung out with her cousin. So amazing. They have a statue of Brigham Young in there. The holocaust museum was touching and powerful. Cole and I ran around the flags of our fathers Marine monument, saw the ruby slippers, r2d2, c3po, lincoln's hat he was shot in, ali's boxing gloves, and lots of other stuff. It was mue bueno. Darla's cousin works for a senator and he's so bummed that mcCain is the candidate and he is republican. he says many of the senators do not want to work with that guy. Oh well we'll see what happens. i'm routing for hillary to win so that 4 years from now the country will wake up and elect someone with a brain. The weather out here has been fantastic and we're trying to stay outside as much as possible. alright team thanks for the blogs. we'll chat again soon.

ColoradoBennett

There are two things that are really bothering me tonight. Blogging is therapy, so here I go: I cannot believe Mitt dropped out of the race! I think of all the work people I know here in Colorado have done for the campaign (we won almost every republican county in the caucus' on Tue.). My mom would tell you that she doesn't think my dad has done anything for the past 3 months but work on Romney's campaign. I'm sure glad Adam didn't let me put my Mitt '08 sticker on my truck. Otherwise I'd be out there tonight scraping it off. What a disappointment. I know 87% of the population of Utah is disappointed too. Second, my sweet, sweet Gram has strep. throat. The big joke in the fam. is that every time someone is sick, Gram is always right there saying, "Maybe it is strep. You should go to the doctor." About three weeks ago my kids were sick. Gram came over and kept telling me to take them in to the Dr. I didn't want to because they didn't seem that sick to me, then there is the awful co-pay, the general pain in the butt process of taking three kids in, the fact that we don't have Rx, etc. I looked strep. up online. It said to keep and eye out for rashes, white spots in the back of the throat, etc. It also said that antibiotics wouldn't make strep go away faster or make you feel better, just makes you non-contagious. If you do have strep and don't go on antibiotics, you can be contagious for up to three weeks. So we are all feeling good now, and poor Gram and Pop feel like they are knocking on death's door. I feel like it is my fault because I had them watch the kids a few times in there (once while Adam and I were giving sacrament meeting talks, I thought it was a good way to get them in a chapel) and that is where they probably picked it up. Adam thinks I'm crazy, that our kids didn't have strep and Gram and Pop could have picked it up any where. I'm just sensitive because my other grandma, Judy, said my kids got her sick once and asked that we never come up to her house when we think we are ill. That meant we couldn't go up there on Christmas Eve and that was a huge disappointment.

Seattle Bennett living in Colorado

Sorry it’s been so long since I've written the doctors thought it was best after suffering a heart attack from reading Mike's blog that I not respond until I can keep my blood pressure down.

I had a rep from the Colorado Law Enforcement Fund call me yesterday and ask me to donate to them. I told them no they asked me why not I told them I don't like cops he asked me why, here is my response

ME: Well when my house was broken into all you did was fill out a report. When I guy that worked for me stole $8,000.00 worth of tools and money from me and I gave you his parole officer's number, his name, social security number, address, x-wife's address, drivers license number, license plate number, his daughters place of business and offered to get the surveillance video. You didn't even contact his parole officer and when I tried to he said he needed contact from the police department. Yet when I drive down the street I get scared thinking your going to give me a ticket. So apparently the criminals aren't afraid of law enforcement with good reason but common everyday people are.

HIM: I'm sorry you feel that way.

ME: me too. But if you ever get my money back I will gladly donate half to your fund, that's a pretty safe bet.

The reason I tell you this story is so that I can emphasize how government talks big but does little to nothing in reality. I can go down the line in the welfare programs I have years of first hand experience in section 8 housing and with illegal immigration or at least the several dozen workers that have been on my site in the last several years.

Socialized medicine now that's a big scary joke yes it would be great if everyone has healthcare. We all do, there is not a hospital that can deny care, that's why ambulances cross the border from Mexico into California and why several hospitals in southern Cali are currently shut down (free healthcare) that is also why emergency rooms are bogged down and it takes forever to get admitted. If you think that it takes socializing medicine to get hospitals up and operational and cut costs to the consumer than all you have done is listen to the media if you want to know the truth about socialized medicine talk to some one like Geof. Who lived in Canada and told me that if you were a freshman and tore your ACL you would be lucky to be back playing sports by the time you graduated. Not to mention that at this point while I pay for my insurance myself at $524.00 a month I still choose whether or not I am funding an abortion or sex change or any other surgery that conflicts with my morals or ethics.

The biggest thing that I can say about government run anything is that if anyone can tell me something that is done better by our government than by the private sector I would be glad to enlarge government but in the meantime we have

FEMA vs. Wal-Mart or the church responding to Katrina

Public schools vs. Private schools and that goes dollar for dollar

USPS vs. UPS, FedEx, or DHL (the increase in the price of a stamp .29 to .41 in ten years is so that they can compete with parcel delivery)

Government run health care vs. Private health care

I know many people worry about the rich being the only ones that are able to afford any good schools or good health care but that is what is happening now as the government takes our money and gives us mediocrity in return. We all know good teachers that are under paid and horrible teachers that are over paid. School agendas that include propping up abortion, teaching about sex, std's, and birth control yet leave out abstinence, teaching the myth of evolution as thou it were fact yet not teaching creationism’s, having there scued view of morals, history, right and wrong (homo sexuality, bisexual, experimenting) taught instead of mine whatever happened to reading writing and arithmetic, the things they were paid to do, not propagandizing.

There is no good candidate for President, there is no perfect party. Government is the largest organized crime ring there is. I would like to vote Ron Paul because he is so far right that I think he may actually be able to get a government smaller. I'm for term limits, no tax a flat tax or consumption tax, smaller government, and the end of entitlement mentality. We should work for what we get, I'm tired of not wanting to give because so much is already being taken I am sick of the misuse of my money as it gets into the governments hands and there be no accountability. The only reason for voting Obama or big government is if McCain wins and it would be better to watch the country on a path of destruction led by a democrat than by a republican. Although Party as a whole trumps person so I still think if I had to, sick feeling and all, I'd vote McCain.

As for today I'm for Ron Paul, against McCain, so I'm voting for Romney

now here is a copy of an email that makes you think
The next time you hear a politician use the word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about whether you want the 'politicians' spending YOUR tax money.
A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its releases.

A. A billion seconds ago it was 1959.

B. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.

C. A billion hours ago our ancestors were
living in the Stone Age.

D. A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.

E.
A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.

While this thought is still fresh in our brain, let's take a look at New Orleans
It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division . .

Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D), is presently asking the Congress for
$250 BILLION to rebuild New Orleans. Interesting number, what does it mean?

A. Well, if you are one of 484,674 residents of
New Orleans (every man, woman, child), you each get $516,528.
B. Or, if you have one of the 188,251 homes in
New Orleans, your home gets $1,329 ,787.

C. Or, if you are a family of four, your family
gets $2,066,012.

APPARENTLY MY HAIR HAS STOPPED GROWING

WE HAVE THIS FAVORITE STORY ABOUT ELLYNN. ONCE UPON A TIME I WAS GIVING HER A TRIM AND WAS GOING TO DO HER BANGS. SHE WOULDN'T LET ME BECAUSE SHE SAID SHE COULD DO IT A WHOLE LOT BETTER THAN I COULD BECAUSE SHE KNEW JUST HOW SHE WANTED THEM. FINE,WITH ME. SHE WENT UPSTAIRS AND WHEN SHE CAME DOWN WE ABOUT DIED LAUGHING--REALLY THAT'S JUST THE WAY YOU WANTED THEM--I NEVER WOULD HAVE GUESSED THAT YOU WANTED THAT MUCH OF YOUR FOREHEAD SHOWING--GOOD THING I DIDN'T TRY TO DUPLICATE THAT. WE WERE BUSTING UP AND HAVE NEVER LET HER LIVE IT DOWN.
WELL PAYBACKS ARE A BITE. I DECIDED I NEEDED TO TRIM MY BANGS AND DO A FEW LAYERS IN FRONT AND I COULDN'T WAIT TILL I GOT TO UTAH FOR ELLY TO DO IT. HONEST I DO KNOW HOW TO CUT HAIR, BUT WHAT CAN I SAY--REMEMBER HAYLEY MILLS IN THE CASTAWAYS OR PARENT TRAP. YES THAT IS EXACTLY THE LOOK I'VE GOT GOING. I THOUGHT I WOULD TRY TO FIX IT, BUT IT COULD GET WORSE. I FIGURED THAT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A GOOD AND A BAD HAIRCUT IS 2 WEEKS RIGHT? APPARENTLY NOT BECAUSE ITS BEEN 2 WEEKS AND I AM STILL SPORTING THE HAYLEY MILLS LOOK ALIKE HAIRCUT.
SO EXCITED FOR UTAH--THE WEDDING AND MY HAIRCUT.
LIFE'S GOOD, LOVE TO ALL, AUNT LE ANNE
PS JESS THE BLOG IS BEAUTIFUL--THANKS FOR THE LINKS.
YES, MONY I TOO AM A CRAZY PERSON, BUT ITS WORKING.

POLLY GLAD TO SEE YOU ON THE BLOG.
DARLA GLAD TO SEE YOU BACK. LOOKING FORWARD TO THE VISIT TO RICHMOND!

book of mormon challenge

brooke and i were talking this afternoon trying to figure out how and when i am going to go see her.  it really is the funnest thing i can imagine.  especially if elly and mom come too!  anyway,  she told me that there is a challenge for everyone to read the book of mormon in 97 days.  a day for every year of Pres. Hinkley's life.  and the challenge starts today.  so if anyone is interested i think it sounds amazing.  i loved when we all read it together last time!!

can anyone think of yuckier months than january and february?  i am so glad that we get to break it up a bit by coming down to cort and rodger's wedding.  good timing guys.  it was so sweet, last night cory prayed for the two of them as they get ready to be sealed in the temple.  i love that cory loves my family as much as i do.

by the way, how is alicia feeling.  i'm so excited for her!  there is something really special about the third baby, wouldn't you agree, paula, joel, lyd, ashlee, beck, ellyn, tristan, and june. did i forget any fabulous 3rd?

love to all..............me

Bavaria

Our RS pres. told us yesterday that there is a challenge going around that is starting today. Read the Book of Mormon in 97 days. One day for each of Pres. Hinckley's years. It sounds like a cool idea. The girls and I had already restarted for Primary and Sunday School. I'm going to give it a try, but with them, I might not make it. We'll see. I miss the intensity of reading it like we did a few years ago.

Bavaria

I just finished my "ball" workout. I didn't think Sawyer would stay asleep long enough for me to run on the treadmill and of course- he did. But it was good to do some toning and not so good to be looking at the crumbs on my floor under my dining room table the whole time.

All is well here. A little too much time indoors this weekend. I felt kind of stressed. I kept trying to get things done but felt like all I was doing was cleaning up one mess after another and never getting anything finished. I ironed the new curtains for my room, got them hung, and Ellyn decided they were just the thing for helping her on to my bed. Crash and huge hole in my cement wall, trampled curtains etc... Plus I have dirtied every pan in my house making food from scratch all weekend. Not to mention Jane and Shyah's homemade breakfast Saturday morning. I'm sorry, cold cereal, bowl and spoon. Love it. I know "cry me a river" everyone feels that way sometimes.

So far Ellyn's diet is going well. She stole two cheezits from a kid in nursery. I took in some Apricot cookies for her but cheezits are her weakness. She gets it from her dad.

Darla, I can't tell you how much I have appreciated Amy's e-mails. She is so enthusiastic and great and hilarious as well. It's been fun reading everything she has to say. I'm also glad you've read Kite Runner and Thousand Splendid Suns. I need to read the second one. I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I am doing some pretty deep reading now- Harry Potter 7. I was waiting for Jane to read 5 so we could read 6 and 7 together but she keeps choosing other books and so I took the hard line and started without her. Of course the only time I have to read is from about 10:40 to 1:00am so you can imagine that I am a little sleep deprived-my own doing. Plus, after staying up till two Friday night I spent the whole night dreaming that Death Eaters were trying to chase me. It was kind of scsry.

Oh, very good news. Mike gets to come home next month for R&R. It was supposed to be May but that month is too busy. Oh yeah, I just remembered he already told you. Anyway, I'm so excited I can hardly stand it.

Well Sawyer's done nursing and he just managed to totally fill his diaper and spit up all over the floor at the exact same time so...I had better get back to life. I love you all. Oh, Jess, loved your blog. I would love if you copied and pasted some stuff over here if you ever get a chance. Just so Mindi :) can save it as kind of our collected family history. What will it be like for our children and grandchildren to read? You don't have to by the way. Okay, really have to go. Love, Brooke the blog nazi-not really kosher to say over here by the by.

Diyala

Well I know it has been sometime since I have blogged. We moved from Baghdad to an area in the north Diyala province to conduct missions against AQ infested areas. Most the major AQI leaders here have now been killed or escaped to other areas and now we spend most our time rebuilding the communites they left behind and weeding out anyone who aided or abetted their operations while they were here. It is pitiful to see what these terrorist groups do to communities. They are truly like the Gadiantons, and they can really only work in secret now. It is tough for me to deal with all the deception and infiltration. I never wanted to be a CIA guy or a organized crime cop, but I feel like that is most of what we do. It is challenging but we are also learning much. Oddly enough, a lot of what I do feels much like my mission in Japan as I go door to door visiting families and "selling" our story of a stronger Iraq.

The family pictured above is the village "muktar" or mayor. His son on my left was seriously injured in an IED attack while he was working with US forces about a year ago. The village they live in has about 3000 people and the name of the town translates to LOST which I though Marnie would love. It is actually as idyllic a place as you get in this somewhat hellish landscape of Iraq. It sits on a rapidly moving canal with main dirt streets running on both sides as it twists through the classical middle eastern architecture. The white and sand colored terraced homes border a wealth of orange groves which extend in all directions from the village. It is quite pleasant to walk through these groves sometimes. Bright oranges dangle amidst the green of the fruit trees themselves while dense palm trees tower above filtering in the sunlight. That is until you find the bomb making materials buried beneath the scene. Then you realize how screwed up this place is as you hear the children playing back in town. If this was the location of Eden, then the fall of man is real apparent right here in the garden.

The men are doing well. They all expected something different and some really do not like the fact that there have been no firefights here. I am grateful for that myself and I think they will be too in years to come as they mature.

The facilities for living up here are beyond poor. The chow is nice and the one thing that cannot be complained about. But the living conditions...it is the one time I have seriously considered skipping the chain of command and writing a long letter to a Senator. People in America should know that there are serious implications to not passing a budget meant to finance this war. Silly partisan games are preventing Soldiers from living like decent human beings. You should know that those partisan politics are directly affecting your son/brother and the way I live day to day. No water to take showers most days, no place to sleep but our vehicles or to overoccupy a tent with cots with muddy floors. Mud everywhere, I had a Soldier contract dysentery the other day. My commander is doing everything he can, including letting us go to another base every few days to sleep in real bunks and take showers and call home. I do not want this to seem like whining, just to show that actions in Washington apply to real people. And it is stuff no care package will fix, however gracious. I would say if the constituents are going to support the war initially then you damn well better see it through until the end. And if it means pulling out early because you cannot continue to financially undewrite the decisions you have made then so be it, otherwise the people of America as represented by the folks in Washington better do the right thing and give troop support more than lip service while the Soldiers are still working hard here. The budget to support the troops is not something to be played with as the blackmail tool for partisan politics. Shame on all Parties.

I am writing from the nice base where we still have kept all our personal things. I say nice but relative to where we were in Baghdad, the place is pretty bad. Still it has most amenities here.
So I love all the Romney propaganda Dad keeps sending out. Good luck to him. Despite my rant above, I believe the country is ready for a major change and I see that in Obama. Romney will only maintain the dangerous status quo conservative leadership. I think they all are letting the country down right now, but I am interested in a major shake up and honestly in terms of education, health care, and regulatory controls of selfish corporations I side more with Democrats. I am all for raising taxes if it means better opportunites for everyone. But they should all be ashamed of themselves and yes just because I said that does not mean I do not despise Pelosi and Hillary.

It is still pretty cold here. It drops below freezing most nights. It is the rainy season so that happens every few days, increasing the mud.

The other day I had an interesting experience as I was invited to the funeral lunch for a 80 year old man that some of my men had accidentally killed. On the first day of operations we had found some large IEDs at an intersection. While we were preppping some explosives to destroy them, some of my men saw an individual several hundred meters away sneaking toward the most likely location of the trigger (the wire to detonate the bomb ran that way). So they engaged the man with their rifles and he was seriously injured and evacuated to a US hospital. He died a few days ago, the day prior to this lunch. It was simply a tragedy and my men did what they had to do to protect themselves with the information they had at the time. So there I was sitting with all the family and extended family outside (about 30 men) being fed a wonderful meal of lamb and rice, all eyes focused on me. I expressed my condolences but they told me not to worry, that Allah willed it. It was just bizarre. Also funerals are historically magneticallly attracted to suicide bombers so it was a strange combination of nervousness (not wanting to be there) and not wanting to offend the people who we had affected so tragically by not being in attendance. So obviously it all ended safely, I delivered a large sum of cash the next day as a condolence payment ( I know westerners cannot conceive of this, we would probably just beat down the poor guy delivering the payment, but here it is the way to make restitution and save face). Allah willed it? What if some foreigner had shot and killed my grandfather? Will Allah also will future revenge against US forces because of it? Is the restitution payment going to prevent Allah from willing that revenge?

I do not know what the coming months hold. I may be changing command in May. I might move my R&R leave to March. I may be taking command of the HQ company. Part of me would love to stay in command as long as possible. The other part of me would like to get back on staff and start working out and getting health again.

I love you all. I look forward to getting back home of course. I think we will be headed back to the states for an assignment no later than September 2009.

What do you think?

So I added a few pictures along the side.  I would eventually like to replace or maybe add to them with pictures of our entire family.  I will also take a picture of all the sisters at Cort's wedding as the one I put up was taken at my wedding.

Mom got a new scanner and was scanning in some old pictures and she sent me this one of me, Lyd and Jord on Halloween in elementary...so cute.

Oh also, I added my link and Cort's too and Brookie I hope you don't mind but I added the Stinchfield's because sometimes I like to peek at theirs and I think others might like to too.  If anyone wants me to post any others or put up more or different pictures let me know.  I was just messing around and put these ones on.

One more thing, just as an FYI, I have heard that once you put pictures and other items along the side you might lose them when you change the design of your blog.  I haven't changed my background yet so I don't know what you need to do so you don't lose everything.  I am going to do some asking around but if any of you know let me know.

Love you all.

Jess

I received this email from my cousin on Mitt Romney. I watched parts of the Republican debate yesterday (wasn't that yesterday?) and was really bothered by John McCain. I don't understand his personal vendetta (I don't know how "prolonged" McCain's hatred has been with Mitt) with Romney. I've been trying to keep myself somewhat informed on each of the candidates; not wanting to get stuck in a conversation with someone and saying, "well, I like Romney because he's mormon..., and I am too." People need more than that. And what a great opportunity Romney's given us to share the gospel. Even if he doesn't get the election, he's shed such a good light on the LDS religion. I hope to continue to research more on him so I can be a greater source of "truth" when others are searching.
By Mark R. Levin:
I have spent nearly four decades in the conservative movement — from precinct worker to the Reagan White House. I campaigned for Reagan in 1976 and 1980. I served in several top positions during the Reagan administration, including chief of staff to Attorney General Edwin Meese. I have been an active conservative when conservatism was not in high favor. I remember in 1976, as a 19-year-old in Pennsylvania working the polls for Reagan against the sitting Republican president, Gerald Ford, I was demeaned for supporting a candidate who was said to be an extremist B-actor who couldn’t win a general election, and opposing a sitting president. And at the time Reagan wasn’t even on the ballot in Pennsylvania because he decided to focus his limited resources on other states. I tried to convince voter after voter to write-in Reagan’s name on the ballot. In the end, Reagan received about five percent of the Republican vote as a write-in candidate. Of course, Reagan lost the nomination to Ford by the narrowest of margins. Ford went on to lose to a little-known ex-governor from Georgia, Jimmy Carter. But the Reagan Revolution became stronger, not weaker, as a result. And the rest is history. I don’t pretend to speak for President Reagan or all conservatives. I speak for myself. But I watched the Republican debate last night, which was held at the Reagan library, and I have to say that I fear a McCain candidacy. He would be an exceedingly poor choice as the Republican nominee for president. Let’s get the largely unspoken part of this out the way first. McCain is an intemperate, stubborn individual, much like Hillary Clinton. These are not good qualities to have in a president. As I watched him last night, I could see his personal contempt for Mitt Romney roiling under the surface. And why? Because Romney ran campaign ads that challenged McCain’s record? Is this the first campaign in which an opponent has run ads questioning another candidate’s record? That’s par for the course. To the best of my knowledge, Romney’s ads have not been personal. He has not even mentioned the Keating-Five to counter McCain's cheap shots. But the same cannot be said of McCain’s comments about Romney. Last night McCain, who is the putative frontrunner, resorted to a barrage of personal assaults on Romney that reflect more on the man making them than the target of the attacks. McCain now has a habit of describing Romney as a “manager for profit” and someone who has “laid-off” people, implying that Romney is both unpatriotic and uncaring. Moreover, he complains that Romney is using his “millions” or “fortune” to underwrite his campaign. This is a crass appeal to class warfare. McCain is extremely wealthy through marriage. Romney has never denigrated McCain for his wealth or the manner in which he acquired it. Evidently Romney’s character doesn’t let him to cross certain boundaries of decorum and decency, but McCain’s does. And what of managing for profit? When did free enterprise become evil? This is liberal pablum which, once again, could have been uttered by Hillary Clinton. And there is the open secret of McCain losing control of his temper and behaving in a highly inappropriate fashion with prominent Republicans, including Thad Cochran, John Cornyn, Strom Thurmond, Donald Rumsfeld, Bradley Smith, and a list of others. Does anyone honestly believe that the Clintons or the Democrat party would give McCain a pass on this kind of behavior? As for McCain “the straight-talker,” how can anyone explain his abrupt about-face on two of his signature issues: immigration and tax cuts? As everyone knows, McCain led the battle not once but twice against the border-security-first approach to illegal immigration as co-author of the McCain-Kennedy bill. He disparaged the motives of the millions of people who objected to his legislation. He fought all amendments that would limit the general amnesty provisions of the bill. This controversy raged for weeks. Only now he says he’s gotten the message. Yet, when asked last night if he would sign the McCain-Kennedy bill as president, he dissembles, arguing that it’s a hypothetical question. Last Sunday on Meet the Press, he said he would sign the bill. There’s nothing straight about this talk. Now, I understand that politicians tap dance during the course of a campaign, but this was a defining moment for McCain. And another defining moment was his very public opposition to the Bush tax cuts in 2001 and 2003. He was the media’s favorite Republican in opposition to Bush. At the time his primary reason for opposing the cuts was because they favored the rich (and, by the way, they did not). Now he says he opposed them because they weren’t accompanied by spending cuts. That’s simply not correct. Even worse than denying his own record, McCain is flatly lying about Romney’s position on Iraq. As has been discussed for nearly a week now, Romney did not support a specific date to withdraw our forces from Iraq. The evidence is irrefutable. And it’s also irrefutable that McCain is abusing the English language (Romney’s statements) the way Bill Clinton did in front of a grand jury. The problem is that once called on it by everyone from the New York Times to me, he obstinately refuses to admit the truth. So, last night, he lied about it again. This isn’t open to interpretation. But it does give us a window into who he is. Of course, it’s one thing to overlook one or two issues where a candidate seeking the Republican nomination as a conservative might depart from conservative orthodoxy. But in McCain’s case, adherence is the exception to the rule — McCain-Feingold (restrictions on political speech), McCain-Kennedy (amnesty for illegal aliens), McCain-Kennedy-Edwards (trial lawyers’ bill of rights), McCain-Lieberman (global warming legislation), Gang of 14 (obstructing change to the filibuster rule for judicial nominations), the Bush tax cuts, and so forth. This is a record any liberal Democrat would proudly run on. Are we to overlook this record when selecting a Republican nominee to carry our message in the general election? But what about his national security record? It’s a mixed bag. McCain is rightly credited with being an early voice for changing tactics in Iraq. He was a vocal supporter of the surge, even when many were not. But he does not have a record of being a vocal advocate for defense spending when Bill Clinton was slashing it. And he has been on the wrong side of the debate on homeland security. He supports closing Guantanamo Bay, which would result in granting an array of constitutional protections to al-Qaeda detainees, and limiting legitimate interrogation techniques that have, in fact, saved American lives. Combined with his (past) de-emphasis on border-security, I think it’s fair to say that McCain’s positions are more in line with the ACLU than most conservatives. Why recite this record? Well, if conservatives don’t act now to stop McCain, he will become the Republican nominee and he will lose the general election. He is simply flawed on too many levels. He is a Republican Hillary Clinton in many ways. Many McCain supporters insist he is the only Republican who can beat Hillary Clinton or Barak Obama. And they point to certain polls. The polls are meaningless this far from November. Six months ago, the polls had Rudy winning the Republican nomination. In October 1980, the polls had Jimmy Carter defeating Ronald Reagan. This is no more than spin. But wouldn’t the prospect of a Clinton or Obama presidency drive enough of the grassroots to the polls for McCain? It wasn’t enough to motivate the base to vote in November 2006 to stop Nancy Pelosi from becoming speaker or the Democrats from taking Congress. My sense is it won’t be enough to carry McCain to victory, either. And McCain has done more to build animus among the people whose votes he will need than Denny Hastert or Bill Frist. And there won’t be enough Democrats voting for McCain to offset the electorate McCain has alienated (and is likely to continue to alienate, as best as I can tell). McCain has not won overwhelming pluralities, let alone majorities, in any of the primaries. A thirty-six-percent win in Florida doesn’t make a juggernaut. But the liberal media are promoting him now as the presumptive nominee. More and more establishment Republican officials are jumping on McCain’s bandwagon — the latest being Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has all but destroyed California’s Republican party. Let’s face it, none of the candidates are perfect. They never are. But McCain is the least perfect of the viable candidates. The only one left standing who can honestly be said to share most of our conservative principles is Mitt Romney. I say this as someone who has not been an active Romney supporter. If conservatives don’t unite behind Romney at this stage, and become vocal in their support for him, then they will get McCain as their Republican nominee and probably a Democrat president. And in either case, we will have a deeply flawed president. — Mark Levin, a former senior Reagan Justice Department official, is a nationally syndicated radio-talk-show host
